The Special Operations Unit was formed in 2003 by combining the Bicycle Patrol, Special Investigations and Highway Enforcement Units, to increase the effectiveness of the Police Department's specialized units. The consolidation allows greater control and flexibility in deploying the unit for special events and addresses crime trends without depleting the resources of the regular patrol unit.
The unit's authorized strength is a sergeant and 12 officers. All officers are crossed trained to function in the three areas of the S.O.U. as follows:
- The Bicycle Patrol Officers are primarily assigned to patrol the business areas and sectors of the township that are not accessible by police cars.
- The Special Investigation Officers work in plainclothes to detect a variety of street crimes, such as narcotics law violations, robberies, and burglaries.
- The Highway Enforcement Officers conduct traffic law enforcement addressing specific problem areas. They operate the "Harley Davidson" Police Road King Motorcycles. Motorcycles are a new addition to the department in 2004, after a 30 year absence.
