The K-9 Unit was established in 1998 and consists of four dogs and their handlers. The K-9 Unit officers are assigned to the Patrol Division. They engage in a variety of specialized activities including tracking, apprehension of fleeing felons, building and area searches, and article and evidence searches. The K-9 officers maintain a high level of visibility and participate in a wide variety of public appearances and educational programs.
In addition to basic patrol skills, Tank and Bosco are trained in narcotics detection. The recent additions to the K-9 Unit are Murphy and Hunter who are currently completing basic training at the Philadelphia Police Academy. Once finished they will undergo cross training in explosives detection. The K-9 Unit has proven to be very valuable asset for the police department. Mrs Daniel J Murphy made a generous donation to the K-9 Unit which facilitated the purchase of one new dog.
